The Department of Biological Sciences currently suggests the Biological Sciences Development Fund – This general fund enables us to support departmental needs not fully covered by our allocated budget, including student travel to attend conferences, honoraria for visiting speakers, and other ongoing activities. Other specific funds are listed below:

  • The Ella P. Stewart Award – Pitt book store certificate to a deserving first-year undergraduate.
  • The Alison Bentley Kephart Memorial Fund – Provides support for an annual prize to a first-year undergraduate student who has demonstrated outstanding potential for a successful career in the biological sciences.
  • Dr. Norman H. Horowitz Fellowship –This award is given to an outstanding undergraduate and provides a stipend and supply budget to pursue an independent research project
  • The Samuel D. Collela Undergraduate Research Fund – This research award provides an outstanding undergraduate researcher with a stipend to continue their independent research
  • The Mary P. Edmonds Award -- This award highlights an outstanding, graduate student-authored publication in the past year
  • Stanton C. Crawford Award – The award annually acknowledges the outstanding teaching accomplishments of a graduate student in the Department
  • Professor Ivy R. McManus Award – Honors an outstanding graduate student upon completion of their first year of study
  • Tousimis-Lauffer Distinguished Annual Lecture – Provides support for an outstanding, internationally renowned researcher to visit the Department, meet with students and faculty, and present a public lecture
