Dr. Graham Hatfull, the Eberly Family Professor of Biotechnology and member of our Department of Biological Sciences, was inducted into the prestigious National Academy of the Sciences as part of the 2025 class.
“I was stunned at the news,” Dr. Hatfull said. “It is an amazing honor to be recognized as a member of the National Academy of Sciences. It is humbling, but wonderfully recognizes the contributions of all of the researchers in my lab over many years.”
Dr. Hatfull's lab focuses on the genomics and evolution of bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria. In addition, Dr. Hatfull is the lead scientist of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's SEA-PHAGES program which brings authentic, discovery-based research into freshman labs at over 150 colleges and universities around the world.
Recently, the Hatfull Lab has also turned towards the clinical world, successfully treating a number of patients afflicted with drug-resistant Mycobacterium infections using phages to help clear the difficult infections.
Dr. Hatfull was inducted into the National Academy in April 2025 in Washington, D.C.
