"From genes to butterfly scales to color diversity"

Abstract: Butterfly wings display a formidable diversity of colors, with wing scales acting as color pixels. Evolution of this system has relied on the modification of patterns, the spatial arrangement of these scales, the regulation of color pigments, as well as on the elaboration of novel cell types that can create structural colors such as iridescence. We combine functional genomics, CRISPR genome editing, and various imaging techniques to delve into the mechanisms that underlie this diversity.
