Building Knowledge, Taking Action

A workshop on the Brain, Bias and Being

Progress in our scientific research and careers requires positive interactions with others, interactions that occur in a culture shaped by subjective information and processes. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about the neurocognitive processes that underlie the social biases behind racism and other group-based prejudice, recognize how implicit assumptions guide social behavior, grapple with how actions with good intent can have negative impact, and practice constructive steps to counteract these.  By applying basic principles of social neuroscience in group discussions, participants will consider the perspectives of those who are targeted by microaggressions, those who observe them, and those who originate them.  Lastly, participants will practice responses to microaggressions and other personal and systemic expressions of racism that can positively contribute to the culture of their department, institution, or organization.
