My focus is on developing research-based biology labs (Foundations of Biology Special Lab 2, 0067) geared towards introductory students. Students have the option to select which research-based lab they would like to participate in that fulfills the same requirements as the 0060 equivalent. In these labs, students can identify and characterize novel viruses found in soil that infect bacteria, investigate how mutations in a human protein called Aquaporin 2 cause a disease called Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus, or collect spiders found locally and determine how their microbiome affects their behavior. I'm interested in determining whether participating in research-based labs promotes student retention in the sciences.
